Yesterday we boarded Air Force One and headed out to Washington, D.C. to start off our government unit in social studies. While we were in D.C. we stopped by the White House for our own private tour! If your children would like to learn more about the White House and explore some of the many rooms, you can go to https://www.whitehouse.gov
With this week being so short, we will not be having a spelling test. Remember that we have Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday off! Enjoy spending time with your families and giving thanks!
Thank you so much to all of the parents who brought in treats for our Halloween party on Friday. The kids had a blast! It was also great to see many of you at the dance that evening. Everyone looked great in all their costumes! Hope you all had a wonderful weekend! On Friday we will be having our Walkathon to help raise money for the school. We will be walking over to West Lawn and doing some fun outdoor activities before heading back to school. Thank you to all of those who have turned in volunteer and donation forms. If you haven't turned them in, please send them to school with your child! I am looking forward to having a wonderful Walkathon! *Make sure you ask your children about the incentives that they chose to earn for their fundraising! Help u meet our goal!! In other news, on Thursday the children received some new playground equipment for recess. They seemed to really be enjoying the new jump ropes and hula hoops! Even some of the teachers joined in on the fun!
With the school year a few weeks under way, we are finally getting settled in! If you were unable to make it to Back to School Night, a classroom handbook was sent home with your child. Please make sure to read through it and send back the signed sheet of paper that can be found at the end of the packet!
Today we had our door decorating contest. I had asked all of the students to dress up in black so we too could be part of our door! We went into the hallway, flapping our wings, and signing the echolocation song which we had been working on! If you don't know what echolocation is, make sure to ask your child! In addition to our door decorating contest, our St. Xavier students (Miss Holly and Miss Caitlin) visited us during math today and taught the lesson. The students got into pairs and made a tally chart with home many times their die landed on a certain side. They were working very hard and always enjoy when Miss Holly and Miss Caitlin come in and help us out! Even though we were only in school for three day last week, we kept very busy! On Tuesday the whole 3rd grade went to see "The Phantom Tollbooth" at the Merle Reskin Theatre. The kids really enjoyed our first field trip of the year and can't wait to finish reading the book! In addition to our field trip, we spent time reviewing some spelling words from previous lessons by playing BAM and measured length using our feet! We learned the importance of everyone using the same unit when measuring different items. The week ended with a successful Math Night. Thanks Lydia and Luna for coming back to school and playing math games that we use in class as part of our Everyday Math curriculum!
Today the students were working in small groups creating a poster about words relating to visual arts. They created a "Four-Square Map" that contained their word, the meaning of the word, a picture representing the word, and a sentence using the word. All of the groups worked real hard on their posters, so after they were finished each group presented their poster and shared what they learned with the class. The words this week were a little trickier than they have in been in the past, but they did an awesome job and their "Four-Square Maps" posters! During religion, Mrs. Radtke came in and joined us for our first day working in the Eucharist books. I blessed each child with Holy Water and then we started our lesson. We talked about Jesus' Baptism before discussing what they know about their own Baptism. They are more than welcome to bring in a picture and share it with the class next week! I brought in a picture from my Baptism as well as my Baptismal gown. I even brought in my Communion dress and my mom's Communion dress along with some pictures. Mrs. Radtke also shared with us her son's Baptismal gown and her daughter's Communion dress. I am so excited to be sharing this special journey with your children! Earlier this week you received a family guide book that goes along with how we are preparing for 1st Holy Communion in class. Please make sure that you are reading it over with your children at home. We will be going over the chapters in order. *Remember we do not have school Monday (10/13) or Friday (10/17). Have a wonderful weekend :) Ms. Ward |
